I do a lot of purchasing with the company I work for and when I'm deciding between the same product sold by different companies on the web, I almost always go with the company who has better design even if it costs more. I have found out through experience that companies who take their design seriously are more concerned about their company's image as well as their customers. They are less likely to disappear over night as well because they have more invested in their website. btw: Craigslist.com could really benefit from a good designer.
